What Natural Soap Colorants Taught Me About Soapmaking

One of the biggest surprises in my soapmaking journey wasn’t learning how to make soap.

It was learning how difficult it can be to predict what nature will do inside a soap mold.

When I first began experimenting with natural colorants, I assumed plants would behave predictably. If a flower was purple, surely it would make purple soap. If a root was red, surely it would create red soap.

Soap quickly taught me otherwise.

The highly alkaline environment of cold-process soap transforms many natural colorants in unexpected ways. Some colors fade. Some intensify. Some completely change character. What begins as a vibrant botanical infusion can become something entirely different after saponification.

Over time, I began documenting my results.

I tested clays, roots, herbs, seeds, infused oils, and natural powders. Some became reliable favorites. Others produced beautiful failures. Every experiment revealed something about the interaction between nature, chemistry, and craftsmanship.

The deeper I went, the more I realized that soapmaking is both an art and a study of observation. Success rarely comes from copying someone else’s recipe. It comes from understanding why ingredients behave the way they do.

That realization eventually became the foundation for my book, The Color of Soap: The Adventure of Natural Colorants in Cold-Process Soap.

The book is not simply a collection of colorants.

It is a record of discovery.

It documents experiments, observations, lessons learned, and the practical realities of working with nature’s palette inside handmade soap.

For those who enjoy soapmaking, natural ingredients, traditional skills, and the process of learning through experimentation, I hope it serves as both a reference and an encouragement.

Nature still has much to teach us.

And sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the batches that don’t turn out exactly as planned.
