My Favorite Natural Colorants … All of Them!

Over this last year of intensive soapmaking and natural colorant testing, I’ve learned one thing clearly: I don’t have a single favorite. I love them all for different reasons.

I love the way alkanet can transform from smoky blue-gray to deep purple, and how the simple addition of a touch of activated charcoal can create a rich, midnight shade that feels both dramatic and elegant. I love how indigo and woad produce beautiful layers of blue, from soft sky tones to deeper, stormy hues.

I love the warmth of annatto, the earthy character of clays, the depth of charcoal, and the surprising ways natural colorants interact with one another. Some create subtle, muted shades that feel timeless and rustic. Others produce colors that are unexpectedly vibrant and breathtaking.

Perhaps what I love most is the endless possibility. Each natural colorant brings its own personality, and each combination opens the door to something new. The more I test, the more I discover that natural soap colorants are not limiting at all. They offer an incredible palette of colors that range from soft and understated to bold and stunningly beautiful.

The list of favorites never really ends, because every new experiment has the potential to become the next one I love.
